Burns & McDonnell Technology Consulting Water Engagement Leader - 1898 & Co. (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


The Technology Consulting Water Industry Engagement Lead role within 1898 & Co., a part of Burns & McDonnell, will inform our industry strategy and be an industry expert that supports our sales, marketing, and execution teams. This role will partner with our business line leaders and our clients in the water industry to deliver solutions at the intersection of business, technology, and operations. This role will advise our business line leaders on service offerings, methodologies, and team development and drive industry best practices into the organization. This role will be highly engaged with our sales and account teams to support targeted client conversations around industry challenges, understand our clients’ needs, and guide our teams as they identify and implement solutions that empower organizations to drive their business toward more efficient operations.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate how our technology solutions address client pain paints, capture critical win components from the client, and drive/support the development of winning proposals. The ideal candidate will be comfortable discussing the current state and guiding teams to move clients to a desired future state. This role requires a deep understanding of our capabilities and the ability to effectively communicate with our clients in the water industry. This role will assist with communicating how our service offerings help water utilities meet their business objectives. This role will mentor and guide our teams and partner with our sales and marketing teams to continue to build the business footprint.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work with Technology Consulting leadership to inform the strategic direction of our water practice and play a key role in operationalizing the strategy.

  • Advise and mentor internal teams to provide service offerings that meet the needs of our clients.

  • Build deep industry expertise and contribute to 1898 & Co. as an industry leader through thought leadership and participation in professional societies, both internal and external.

  • Lead/advise on project delivery (scope, approach, methodologies) to ensure clients and project teams are positioned for long-term success.

  • Effectively present consulting services and solution offerings to prospects and existing customers virtually and in person.

  • Lead/support the positioning of service offerings, including collaborating with internal (and/or external) partners on the development of a strategic plan, target customers, tailored offering collateral, and responses to RFIs and RFPs.

  • Lead/support the adaptation of standard value propositions, templates, and guides to support the effective communication of capabilities and delivery of projects.

  • Regular review and iteration on service offerings message to align with customer needs and improve market penetration.

  • Lead/support large, complex, multi-business line pursuits through the full sale process from identifying to closing the opportunity.

  • Follow through on quarterly financial goals: building and advancing opportunities through the sales funnel, customer satisfaction, and repeat business.

  • Support quarterly strategy reviews with a data-driven approach to evaluate the market and effectiveness of current plans.

  • Support process improvement by review of sales processes, proposal processes, and identify areas to improve for existing service offerings. Be a part of the culture to continuously improve in a systematic way.

  • Understand the industry’s technology footprint, business drivers, and technology drivers. Maintain up-to-date market knowledge and commitment to continuous learning.

  • Establish and maintain long-term business relationships.

  • Serve as an industry liaison to our internal AEC business units.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited curriculum (preferred - Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology or related field).

  • Minimum 7 years of related experience (Preferred experience within the water industry and/or management consulting with a significant portion of the experience focused on the water industry -treatment, distribution, supply, collection).

  • Minimum 5 years of experience leading transformation in at least one of the following verticals: Advanced Metering Infrastructure | Enterprise Asset Management | Computerized Maintenance Management Systems | Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition | Workforce Management Systems | Operational Analytics | Utility Management | Hydraulic Modeling Systems (preferred).

  • Previous roles that engaged with external customers in a consulting capacity (preferred)

  • Working with clients to deploy/integrate/adopt operational technology platforms (preferred)

  • Preparing solutions focused on service definition and growth (preferred)

  • Developing solutions that lead to results with business impact (preferred)

  • Developing customer relationships and winning work (preferred)

  • Advancing organization goals and growth (preferred)

Preferred Skills:

  • Combination of technical skills and business acumen applied to solve complex customer challenges

  • Consulting experience and ability to manage Technology Implementation projects within IT and OT space of Utility Clients.

  • Knowledge of the Water Utility Industry as it relates to technology services and implementation in treatment, distribution, supply, and collection.

  • Knowledge of enterprise IT architecture and the ability to implement them across many tools & platforms

  • Strong leadership, project management, time management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Critical thinking and prioritization of resources to provide the most value to customers.

  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and make timely decisions.
