Burns & McDonnell Assistant Mechanical / Industrial Engineer – 1898 & Co. Utility Consulting (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri


The Assistant Mechanical/Industrial Engineer (Technical Advisory Analyst) will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams with developing solutions to technical challenges encountered by our utility clients. The Technical Advisory Analyst will utilize engineering knowledge to drive sound business strategies and work with the project team through engineering studies and evaluations.

  • Assists in the mechanical and electrical engineering design of utility planning projects through the conceptual phase.

  • Assists with modifying and reviewing engineering drawings for a variety of projects including, but not limited to: power plants, process facilities and industrial facilities.

  • Applies basic knowledge of commonly used mechanical and electrical concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the engineering services industry.

  • Assists in performing field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.

  • Assists with research and applies project related data as required by the project managers.

  • Assist with engineering, financial, and technical analysis for various engineering projects including power generation, power delivery, and other utilities.

  • Assist in developing and performing detailed financial analysis using a variety of computer-based software.

  • Assist project managers, engineers and technical analysts to develop and incorporate technical assumptions regarding capital costs, operation and maintenance costs, performance estimates, and economic assumptions and forecasts.

  • Assist with developing technical reports and presentations summarizing results of analysis.

  • Assist with organizing data into report format and arrange graphic illustrations of research findings. Assist with interpreting financial and economic conditions and subsequent business implications to client projects

  • Assists with client presentations, design review, financial analysis, and contract administration for the design of utility systems for various industries and markets.

  • Assist with power system planning and operations analysis including: power flow, transient, stability, reliability and economic dispatch.

  • Assist with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and regional requirement assessments.

  • Assist with technical and business related risk assessments.

  • Apply basic mechanical electrical engineering theory and principles to complete assigned tasks on planning, analysis, and other projects.

  • Perform various study analyses utilizing power system software.

  • Participate in internal and/or external electric utility industry conferences.

  • All other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program or Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Chemical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering may be substituted for 1 year of experience.

  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community.

  • Basic knowledge in standard engineering techniques, principles and procedures.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.

  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
